Wheelchair Accessibility

The Ben Youssef Madrasa is partially accessible to wheelchair users. The main entrance and the magnificent central courtyard on the ground floor are accessible and offer a wonderful experience of the site's architectural beauty. From the courtyard, you can fully admire the Zellij tilework, the reflecting pool, and the intricately decorated facades.

However, the upper floors, which contain the small student dormitory cells, are not accessible by wheelchair. These areas are reached via several sets of narrow, steep staircases. The historic nature of the building does not allow for the installation of elevators or ramps to these levels.

Visitors with Other Mobility Needs

Visitors who can manage stairs but have limited mobility should be aware that the steps are old and can be uneven. There are no handrails on most staircases. The ground floor courtyard is flat and easy to navigate. There are no benches for resting within the site, so visitors should plan accordingly.
